How to Measure Yourself

Bust

  1. 1.Stand straight with your arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. 2.Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust.
  3. 3.Keep the tape level across your back and snug but not tight.
  4. 4.Read the measurement in inches or centimeters.

Waist

  1. 1.Stand naturally and locate your natural waistline, the narrowest part of your torso.
  2. 2.Wrap the tape around your waist, keeping it level all the way around.
  3. 3.Don't pull the tape too tight — you should be able to fit a finger between the tape and your body.
  4. 4.Read the measurement while breathing normally.

Hips

  1. 1.Stand with your feet together.
  2. 2.Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
  3. 3.Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor.
  4. 4.Make sure the tape is snug but doesn't compress the skin.

Tips for International Size Shopping

1

Know that sizing standards differ by country

A US 6 is not the same as a French 6 or an Italian 6. Each country has its own numbering system, so always convert rather than assuming the number means the same thing everywhere.

2

Take your measurements before shopping

Measure your bust, waist, and hips with a soft tape measure. These three numbers are the foundation for finding the right size in any international system.

3

Check the brand's own size chart

Even within the same country, brands can vary by a full size or more. Many retailers publish their own measurement tables, which are more accurate than generic conversion charts.

4

Pay attention to the cut and style

A bodycon dress and a relaxed blazer in the same labeled size will fit very differently. Consider how the garment is designed to sit on your body before choosing a size.

5

Size up for structured garments

Jackets, blazers, and coats are less forgiving than knits. If you're between sizes in structured outerwear, go with the larger size for comfortable layering.

6

Review the return policy for international orders

Returns on international purchases can be costly and slow. Before ordering, confirm the retailer's return process and keep all tags on until you're sure about the fit.

FAQ on Women's International Size Conversion Chart

Start by figuring out your US dress size from your body measurements (bust, waist, hips). Then find that number in the first column of the chart and read across. If your US size is 8, you'd be a UK/AU 12, Italian 44, French 40, German 38, Japanese 13, and Russian 46. Brand fit still varies, so treat the chart as your starting point and check the brand's own guide when you can.
